Yang Hao who danced electrifyingly in China, Hong Kong and America, presents a unique “Dance-up Comedy” in Hong Kong on 25 & 27 January 2019 at Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Road.

Yang Ho is young & energetic. He is a truly international artist: he studied in Mainland China, Hong Kong (The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts) and USA (Yale University). He was an artist chosen by The Hong Kong Jockey Club in their art incubation program called “Jockey Club New Arts Power” i.e. supporting potential great artists to do a series of performances. He performed traditional Chinese dance and modern ones. When I first saw his dance, I was carried away by his electrifying and powerful body movements: like a snake creeping, crawling and swinging. He is dedicated to dance and told me the rest of his life will be all about dance (well, perhaps except his French wife).

Yang is also an artist full of creative ideas and wits. We once had a coffee time at Starbucks, Exchange Square. We were sad at the fact in Hong Kong, performances of modern dance were not as popular as they should be. Audience often said “It is hard to comprehend”. Yang told me his dance career has been a struggle of joys and pains. “ I always ask myself: what equal value should I exchange with an apathetic society in order to get their support?” I proposed to Yang that he might hopefully get a larger crowd of audience if he could try to add a little bit of his personal “spice” into his work. Yang replied “Wow, it will be my sense of humor!” This man is serious about anything and incredibly, we came up with the interesting idea of “Dance-up Comedy”. His fusion is to mix comedic elements into a modern dance. Yang said “Dance is my spiritual expression whereas comedy is my intellectual expression.” Yang also warned “ Watch out! Boys & Girls: my humor is very black and it may turn out to be a great movie instead of a mere dance!”

Hong Kong is lucky to have Yang Hao i.e. a “transferred asset” from Mainland China into Hong Kong!! (did my humour work?)
