Zhou was born in a mountain village. He and his elder sister were the “left-behind” children (留守兒童) in the rural areas. His parents were very poor and had to work in the city, only coming home once a year. He and his sister had to look after themselves from a very young age and they often ate eggs to survive. After graduation from high school, he went to Ukraine to study dentistry and that he disliked. He made a bold decision to transfer to a musical academy. His vocal range is famous as being that of a countertenor. In China, he participated in a national singing contest. His unique voice, despite his lack of a handsome face and a big body physique, shocked the music judges who gave him an exceptionally high score. After the contest, Zhou gradually embarked on the road to the success of a “bel canto” pop style when his persistence paid off.
Zhou held a concert Zhou Shen 2025 ShenShen’s Concert Tour (周深2025深深的巡迴演唱會) in Hong Kong on 2025.12.31 and 2026.01.01, celebrating New Year’s Eve. If not for Zhou’s spectacular voice and breathtaking singing, the concert would have been quite ‘standard’ and not remarkable. The stage design and production are uninspiring. The band is ordinary and perfunctory, without any artistic surprise. The dancers are just dolled-up figures that remind the audience that Zhou is not alone on stage. Apart from Zhou himself, the other things of the concert really fail to evoke any beautiful excitement in those who attended the performance, especially when these audience are the hard-core fans of Zhou Shen and they came chiefly for their super idol. I am particularly against the idea of having a magic show in Zhou’s concert as we would like to enjoy Zhou’s magic tricks with his charming singing, not the boring interruption by some irrelevant magicians.
The greatest gift of human beings from God is the possession of a rare artistic talent that can create the power of love, beauty and possibility. Nobody gets justice. Zhou Shen had his bad time when he was a boy, and now he is lucky and not hiding from the good and successful time which he deserves.
